State and recognise that ultrasound is a longitudinal wave.
Recognise features of a longitudinal wave:
- amplitude;
- wavelength;
- frequency;
- compression;
- rarefaction.
Describe and recognise that ultrasound can be used in medicine:
- to look inside people by scanning the body;
- to break down kidney and other stones;
- to measure the speed of blood flow in the body.
Describe features of longitudinal waves:
- amplitude;
- wavelength;
- frequency;
- compression;
- rarefaction.
State and recognise that the frequency of ultrasound is higher than the upper threshold of human hearing.
Describe applications of ultrasound:
- body scans;
- breaking down kidney and other stones.
Describe the motion of particles in longitudinal and transverse waves.
Explain how ultrasound is used in:
- body scans (reflections from different layers;
- breaking down accumulations in the body such as kidney stones.
Explain the reasons for using ultrasound rather than X-rays:
- able to produce images of soft tissue;
- does not damage living cells.

Objectives:
Properties of waves - longitudinal and transverse. Nature of ultrasound including frequency spectrum of human hearing.
Prior Learning:
Difficult Concepts:
rarefaction and compressions in air
Outline:
demo human hearing using a signal generator and loudspeaker. Use an oscilloscope and microphone to show that the sound is really still there even though we can't hear it.
draw wave descriptions defining time period, amplitude, wavelength, frequency and wave speed.
Use slinky spring to demonstrate longitudinal nature of sound waves.
You could demo wavelength, frequency, amplitude and wave speed using the ripple tank - make sure to use it to distinguish transverse from longitudinal waves though.
Medical uses of ultrasound especially foetal abnormality scans. Discuss purpose of scans done at different stages of pregnancy.
Compare with X-ray scans. Advantages and disadvantages from a medical perspective. Use videos in the resources section to clarify x-ray ultrasound
Suggested Practicals:
ripple tank demo
slinky spring
audible spectrum demo - signal generator and loudspeaker
Extension Activities:
Look at idea of Doppler Effect focused on blood velocity measurements fom foetal scans.
Homework:
