Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the Sun. It was discovered in 1916 and it’s distance was measured in 1917 by a Dutch astronomer J. Voute, based in South Africa. He measured the parallax as 0.755 arcseconds. The error in his measurement was quoted as +/- 0.028 arcseconds.

Previously Tycho Brahe in the sixteenth century rejected the heliocentric view of the universe put forward by Copernicus because he failed to discover any stellar parallax. Why do you think it took so long to discover the parallax of stars?
